Hello Brothers and welcome to the better late than never 3rd installment of the ROAD CAPTAINS CORNER. Let me first say that it has been a verybusy but rewarding riding season so far. We started off the season with a great turnout for the carshow, followed by our Run For Respect that new patch Jim Gilchrist had brought to the attention of myself and Big V. It took us to four local cemetaries where a Medal Of Honor recipients were buried and we paid homage with a ceremony at each gravesight.

    The run moved on to Bayonne where we stopped to see the launching davitt that launched PT boats at the Alco Yacht co, who were making the PT boats of WWII, this particular davitt launched the famous PT109 that JFK served on. We moved on to the former MOT ( Military Ocean Terminal ) where we viewed the tear drop monument given to us by Russia for remberance of 911. we continued further into Bayonne to visit their Vietnam Memorial and ended with a great lunch at the Bayonne VFW post 226, and a tour of their museum.

    We followed up with a Wounded Warrior Run down to Maryland. We assisted the three Maryland Chapters in escorting Warrior busses from Both Bathesda Naval Hosptal, and Walter Reid to Fort Detrick where the Maryland Cattlemans Assoc. held a BBQ for the Warriors. Rocky did a great job organizing the run, and my hats off to Bomber and the Old Line Brothers. Looking foward to making it an annual run.

    We just completed our Cape May Run and I have to say that it was also a good time had by all involved. While there, we visited the Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum where we were welcomed with open arms and treated like VIP by the volunteers operating the museum that day. Some of the volunteers are Vietnam Vets and it is always my great pleasure to see our Vietnam Vets trade their stories and share the brotherhood they shared
while serving. Pictures of the runs should be up on the website soon. We then went across the street to the Capy May Navel Air Station Museum.

    We ended the day by going to Sunset Beach for our Flag Ceremony at sunset. Words can't express the feelings that were felt during the ceremony. We were lucky enough to spend time with the family of the WWII Vet whose Flag was being honored that night. We also spent some time with Marvin Hume the Gentleman who has been doing the ceremony for over thirty years. The Nam Knights got an  onarable mention for our participation at the begining of the ceremony, and the family was very appreciative of our presence. It was great to meet some new faces from both the South Jersey Chapter, and the Delaware Valley Chapter, and their assistance to me during the run was very much appreciated. And as always the BROTHERHOOD was felt by all. I must also mention that it was a pleasure to have Ace's Wife Tammy and my own Nam Knight Lady Kathy join us on the run.

    For the future I had to juggle a couple of runs I had planned due to conflicts with othe runs so stay tuned and I should have some new dates for both the Battleship New Jersey Run, and the Cowtown run.

    Its an honor to serve my Brothers of the Parent Chapter, and the Brothers of all the other Chapters. I appreciate all the tips and advice I
receive from senior members and past Road Captains.

    Now for my most important announcement. I had approached the Eboard about getting some assitance in setting up runs and leading the club
when I am not available. I'm pleased to have Wil (Icepik) Hanlon fill that spot.


    I'm still looking for Ideas for this Sept. 11th, it's the 10th anniversary and I feel very strongly about putting a run together, if anyone has any
good ideas please contact me.


Now what you have all been waiting for the ever popular tech tips.

1) The most important tip I can give you is do visual checks on your bikes. It only takes a few minutes and could prove to be worthwhile. I was
washing my bike a few weeks ago pulled off the saddle bags to wash the rear tire and rim, I found a huge chunk out of my rear tire, was right down to cords. Had to cancel the run that I was going on but I hate to think what could have happened.


2) Make sure to keep bikes serviced and oil changed it has been a hot riding season so far, and air cooled engines kick the crap out of oil in hot
riding conditions, especially if you get caught in traffic alot. Don't forget your trans oil and primary case oil, and primary chain adjustment.


3) I spoke with Bob Steele of Steeles Custom Cycles recently and asked him when brake fluid should be changed, another service item we
usually dont think about. He recommended approx 10,000 miles, for some of us that is about a season of riding. I did some research on line,
and it looks like DOT 5.1 glycol based brake fluid may be the best bet for newer Harley's. It is important not to mix glycol based, and silicone
based brake fluids together, they are not compatible. You must drain the entire system if changing from one to the other. As always if in doubt
about anything you can call myself, 3J's Jack, or Bobby Steele, and always check the owners manual.
